Iowa State parted ways Monday night with Steve Prohm after six season as the Cyclones men's basketball coach.
By now, that's old news. So let's bring you something fresh …
In this space, our Iowa State insiders Travis Hines and Randy Peterson are jotting down the key notes they are hearing from sources as Jamie Pollard moves to hire next Cyclones basketball coach.
We'll keep this story updated with the odds and ends of the search until the end.
6 a.m. Thursday: Is this the day?
What could be happening now in the hunt to find Steve Prohm's replacement? An athletics director at another school suggestedWednesday night that Jamie Pollard and/or a search firm could be in the vetting process of the final one or two candidates. Don't discount the fact Iowa State, a state school, could be in human relations protocol that might call for the opening to be posted a specific number of days. -- Randy Peterson
2 p.m. Wednesday: Waiting game
After a flurry of movement - at least in the media sphere - on Tuesday night, things have gone very quiet through Wednesday.
Divining what that silence means is anyone's guess.
There's been no chatter from either the UNLV or Iowa State side of things - no team meetings, no denials, no confirmations, no nothing. Still, talking to industry sources, there have been no new names or scenarios that have really emerged.- Travis Hines
9 a.m. Wednesday: Reaching a conclusion?
Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard said Tuesday that this would likely be a quick search, and reports began to surface just a few hours later that would seem to confirm his hunch.
Both the Las Vegas Review-Journal and CBS Sports reported that Iowa State is on the verge of coming to an agreement with UNLV's T.J. Otzelberger, who has long been considered the favorite for the job.
While the hiring hasn't been confirmed, signs continue to point to Otzelberger, with an announcement possible as early as Wednesday. We'll keep you posted through the conclusion of the search.- Travis Hines
12:54 p.m. Tuesday: Search firm?
Like many major schools, search firms do some heavy-lifting during major coaching searches. Iowa State recently has hired the Parker firm out of Atlanta. I asked Iowa State if that would continue to be the case with this search, and so far, I haven't heard back. -- Randy Peterson
12:50 p.m. Tuesday: Cyclones and potential transfers
Pollard took that into account in his anticipation for a swift coaching search.
“With the landscape that we’re in now in college athletics – with transfers being able to leave and be eligible right away in other schools, with the recruits that we’ve signed, we have a responsibility to those young men to be able to share with them sooner than later who their head coach is going to be,” Pollard said on a video Tuesday. “We will not sacrifice quality of the search just to expedite the search.” -- Randy Peterson
10:45 a.m. Tuesday: Prohm says thanks
Steve Prohm released a statement through social media Tuesday morning thanking a number of different parties for his six years leading the Cyclone program.- Travis Hines
10 a.m. Tuesday: Pollard says there's no "short-term fix"
Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard released a video statement Tuesday morning detailing his decision to move on from Prohm and what may be next for the program. Get the whole story here.
Pollard is not scheduled to hold a press conference nor has he responded to interview requests from The Register.
Also, our Matt Bain touched base with 2021 signee Tyrese Hunter's coach about what the top-50 prospect may do in the wake of Prohm's exit.- Travis Hines
8:30 a.m. Tuesday: Day 1 of the search

10:42p.m. Monday: Players told to expect quick search
Iowa State players heard from Charles Small, Iowa State senior associateathletic for student services, Monday night not long after the announcement that their head coach was on his way out.
Players were told that things will move quickly as the school looks for a replacement, according to a source with knowledge of the discussion.
Prohm had not yet had a chance to address the team by late Monday.
Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard has not yet spoken about the decision to move on from Prohm or what the shape of the search may take. Iowa State has said Pollard will have "additional comment" on Tuesday, but it's currently unclear if that means there will be a press conference with questions from reporters.— Travis Hines
10:25p.m. Monday: What about Archie Miller as a candidate?
Archie Miller, one of college basketball's top up-and-comers when he was at Dayton, is now available after getting the hook from Indiana.
He's young (42) and is just a few years removed from being one of the darling coaching candidates in the sport. Is he worth a close look by Iowa State?
I asked someone well-placed in college coaching circles about that. The response:
Archie Miller is a good coach. He's not as outgoing as some past Iowa State coaches, though.
Is that important? That's for Jamie Pollard to decide. In comparison, no one's going to be as outgoing as Johnny Orr. No one's going to be nicknamed "The Mayor."— Randy Peterson
